When this teacher took over the 7th grade class in November, there were few procedures in place and virtually no adherence to them. She implemented a paper tickets reward system for when students follow procedures. Tickets are added to class raffle for various items such as school supplies, coupons, and privileges.

Strategies summary

-Catch students following procedures and recognize them in a non-verbal, concrete manner

-Use a system that is cheap, quiet, and easy

-Begin by rewarding very often. As adherence picks up use intermittent rewards but often enough to keep students from losing ground in their success

Student behavior

Chaotic classroom with many behavior problems and little time spent in learning activities

Questions to consider

1.     What was the teacher trying to accomplish? What behaviors indicate success or need for further strategies?

2.     What alternative strategies do you propose?
