Off Task-Paired Work: First Grade

 

Notice how the teacher uses questions to guide student to define and commit to desired behavior while reinforcing the student’s sense of competence.

A student wanted to sit with his friend during a class work period. Teacher asked the student if he thought he could be a helper to his friend rather than distract him from completing his work. The teacher notices that the two students are off task.

Strategies summary 

Asks question to get student to evaluate the situation rather than stating her observation: “Are you OK here?”

Elicits buy-in for desired behavior by giving a choice/ consequence: “If this is too difficult, I can …”

Student defines desired behavior: “What does a helper do?”

Sets up student accountability: “I will be watching.”
